The original Horkinstone Baptist Sunday School and Chapel, built in 1836, was located at the junction of Black Moor Road and Denholme Road. It was abandoned in 1924 and demolished but the graveyard remains (photo right). In 1863 a new Baptist School was built further down the Leeming Road (photo above) which became a day school. The school closed in 1957 but the premises continued to be used by the Sawood Methodists. They are now a private residence.
In common with many chapels in days gone by Horkinstone provided an annual Christmas Day tea. We read in the Keighley News in December 1883: "The Christmas entertainment in connection with this school was a great success. The distribution of prizes, which has become a recognised yearly thing, due to the kindness of Mr. W. Kershaw, also took place during the evening. About 300 sat down to an excellent tea. After tea Mr. Kershaw took the chair when an excellent programme of glees, duets, readings, and songs together with piano duets by Mrs. Crabtree and Mrs. Kershaw was performed. Mr. L. Crabtree presided at the piano. Addresses were given by the Rev. Job Lee and Messrs. J. Heap and Thomas Wilson."
After the abandonment of the
original chapel a new chapel was built in 1927 even further down the Leeming Road. |
