Marsh is about a mile or so on the old road from Haworth to Hebden Bridge. It is likely that Methodists met for worship at Marsh during the time of William Grimshaw. In the years immediately preceding the building of the Sunday School services were held at the nearby farm of Mouldgreave. One of the named 1836 Trustees was Robert Binns, farmer at Mouldgreave.

In 1845 there was a revival in the vicinity that lasted several months. New services were held at Stairs for a time (1848-1850).

Chapel membership remained bouyant throughout the nineteenth century; the original building was extended in the 1870s. Marsh maintained chapel traditions such as open air Anniversary services and Christmas Day teas right up until the 1960s and 1970s. The Chapel continues to hold Sunday services.
