The first Baptist Chapel in West Lane was built in 1752. James Hartley, a convert of William Grimshaw was the first minister (died 1780). The Baptist cause flourished under his powerful preaching. This first chapel was replaced near to the same spot in 1775. Galleries were added in the following decade and there was further enlargement of the chapel building in 1844. School rooms were built behind and there are graveyards to the front and rear.
At the beginning of the twentieth century there was an attempt to promote the Baptist cause at Cross Roads. The Keighley News in April 1902 reported "Under the auspices of the Haworth West Lane Baptists, the Rev. Dr. Minifie preached an eloquent sermon in the Co-operative Assembly Room, Lees, last Saturday afternoon, before a capital attendance." This took place in the time of the Rev. David Arthur, one of West Lane's longest serving ministers (1889-1928). During his time a circuit consisting of West Lane, Hawksbridge and Horkinstone Churches was started. Fellow minister the Rev. A.H. Lewis was a driving force behind the building of a New School Chapel at Hawksbridge in 1915. In recent years some of the chapel lands were sold for housing and the monies applied to a major refurbishment. It has resulted in a building highly suited to community use as well as contemporary worship. A good number of organisations, including the local parish council and the Bronte Society, have regular bookings for the chapel rooms. |
