William Grimshaw during his ministry at Haworth (1742-1763) was concerned that he might not be succeeded by a gospel man. He had a preaching house built in West Lane in 1758 that his flock could make use of. In the event it was little used and fell into decay. It was not until the end of the eighteenth century that a methodist congregation was established at West Lane. Subsequently a Sunday School was built in 1830 and a new chapel built in 1846. There were further Sunday School extensions in the nineteenth century and the chapel itself had a major refurbishment in 1903/04.

Sadly, congregations and Sunday School attendances declined in the following years. The chapel building was pulled down in 1951 and a room within the Sunday School was converted into a chapel. Some of the furnishings and memorials were transferred from the old chapel.

The plaque celebrating Grimshaw's foundation is relocated above the entrance.
