North Yorkshire Moors Holiday Pages

On the other side of Goathland from where we were staying is the isolated and secluded valley of Wheeldale. On the moors above is what is conjectured to be a Roman Road. It is known as Wade's Causeway. Wade is a giant of local legend who is supposed to have built it for his wife to keep cattle on the moor. Its course is not dead straight and doubt has been cast. If it was a Roman Road it was likely to have been a service road for the coastal signal stations. Judge for yourself from the photograph below (the road is to the left). Only the foundations remain, the surface stones and dressing have long since gone.

Roman Road, Wheeldale

It was while on a walk to capture this and other photographs of the road that I spotted this rock in the shape of an anvil. Do you agree there is a likeness?
