North Yorkshire Moors Holiday Pages

On the Monday of our holiday we visited Whitby and in the afternoon the Pannett Gallery. It had three viewing galleries, one for changing contemporary exhibitions, one devoted to the local artist George Weatherill (1810-1890), and one to the Staithes Group of artists.

Pannett Gallery, Whitby

There is an article on the Staithes Group of artists in the January 1999 and August 2007 issues of the Dalesman magazine. About 100 years ago these artists sought their inspiration in the everyday lives of fisherfolk in an isolated community. Theirs is an art style similar to the Newlyn Group (Cornwall) - an English version of impressionism, tempered, naturalistic, seeing the symbolism in ordinary lives facing life's dramas.

Staithes, taken early evening of Thursday in our holiday week.

We visited the Gallery again in June 2007 and here is a list of many of the pictures we saw in the Staithes room.

The pictures were more fully labelled than in 1999 and extra information was available in folders.
